Roger Ascham (? - 23 December ) was an English writer and academic – famous for his prose style, his promotion of the vernacular, and his theories of education – who wrote poetry in Latin. He acted as Princess Elizabeth's tutor in Greek and Latin between and , and served in the administrations of Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth I. Askham was born at Kirby Born: c. Kirby Wiske, Yorkshire.

  This book is the earliest primer on the sport of archery and its practice. Roger Ascham lays the foundation for the proper technique used in shooting a bow (in this case the English Longbow) and the equipment needed. In later years the storage cabinet used to hang an unstrung bow became know as an "Ascham". Toxophilus?is a book about?longbow?archery?by?Roger Ascham, first published in London in Dedicated to?King Henry VIII, it is the first book on archery written in English.
